Another miss for Rank Strangers at Hood To Coast

Strike Two!  We failed in our second attempt at acceptance to Hood To Coast (HTC) relay, so we won't race there in 2014.  Got word yesterday that our application had been accepted.  There's always next year (2015).

HTC is the Largest Relay in the world, 33 years old.  The  The 2014 event will include 12,600 runners and 3,600 volunteers.   HTC began in 1982 with 8 teams and has filled the team cap on the opening day of registration for the last 16 years straight.

HTC says we'll get preferential treatment in the lottery next year
and we'll certainly try again.

2013 photo book hits the street

The annual photo book has gone out to 2013 team members, marking the official end of the Rank Stranger season.   Link to book (Snapfish)

From the book:

Rank Strangers had another success in the Madison - Chicago run relay on June 7- 8, 2013. Our 31 hour time met our predicted pace, despite two uplanned course additions (3.8 miles to avoid a broken bridge and 2.2 miles due to a volunteer's 4 AM gaffe) making the planned 195.4 race a record 201.4 miles.

The ninth Rank Stranger team boasted 7 newcomers: Bo Lackey, Bill Shepard, Therese Nolan, Beth Fegan, Pati Flannery, Tim Scott and Paul Miller. That gives us a total of 47 in the Rank Stranger family.

Rank Strangers finished in its typical middle-of-the-pack spot, 145th among the 251 teams in the "Regular Mixed Open" division. Overall we were 260th out of 429 finishers. Our average time per mile was 9:14.

The 2013 team, with the number of prior appearances in parentheses:
Jeff Shampo (9), Eric Engdahl (9), Art Saffran (8), Renee Roux (6), Pete Boll (4), Paul Miller, Pati Flannery, Bo Lackey, Bill Shepard, Tim Scott, Therese Nolan, Beth Fegan. 7-time runner and co-founder Mark Clear drove Van #1.

Rank Strangers touch up record book

Last month's Madison-Chicago relay saw our team add seven (7) runners to the Rank Stranger network and numerous changes to the record book.

Rank Strangers finished in its typical middle-of-the-pack spot, 145th among the 251 teams in the "Regular Mixed Open" division.  Overall we were 260th out of 429 finishers.  Our average time per mile was 9:14.  We were 11 hours and 20 minutes behind the division and overall winner, Team NUNN, which averaged 5:56 per mile.

Our new runners were Beth Fegan, Pati Flannery, Therese Nolan, Tim Scott, Bo Lackey, Bill Shepard and Paul Miller.

The team made its mark on the record book, including Beth, Art and Therese with runs of more than 8 miles:

Fourteen (14) Rank Strangers have had runs of more than 8 miles: Keith (2), Kim (2), Randy (2), Marc G. (2), Martin (2), Holly, Steve H., Ed S., Jeff, Art, Monique, Jennifer, Beth, Therese.  The 8+ milers: Monique 11.8, Keith 11.7, Jennifer 10.9, Keith 10.7, Kim 9.9, Art 9.9, Beth 9.3, Art 9.1, Randy 9, Martin 8.8, Holly 8.6, Steve H. 8.6, Randy 8.6, Marc G. 8.4, Kim 8.4, Marc G. 8.2, Martin 8.2, Ed S. 8.2, Therese 8.2, Jeff 8. (Keith’s runs, Monique’s 11.8 and Art’s 9.1 mile runs spanned multiple legs; the others were single legs).

Jeff increased his lead in all time mileage with 169.7 miles to Eric's 162.5 miles.   Jeff has averaged 18.9 miles over 9 relays; Eric has averaged 18.1.

Martin and Monique (2 relays apiece) are the only multiple-race Rank Stranger to average more than 20 miles per relay.  Top average miles (2 or more relays): 1. Martin (2) 21.3, 2. Monique (2) 20.4, 3. Holly (3) 19.8, 4. Jeff (9) 18.9, Ed Stojakovic (2) 18.9, 6. Chris (2) 18.4, 7. Eric (9) 18.1, Steve H. (3) 18.1, 9. Kim Hill (2) 17.9, 10. Marc Golab (4) 17.5.

We made it!

The blogging was not so good (sorry about that!) but the Rank Strangers team enjoyed a happy ending to the Madison - Chicago run relay at Montrose Harbor yesterday afternoon.  Our 31 hours time was on our predicted pace, though two unplanned course additions (3.8 miles to avoid a broken bridge and 2.2 miles) made the planned 195.4 race a record 201.4 miles.

Was it the best race ever for Rank Strangers?  Van #1 says so, and it was loaded with veterans including 9-timer Jeff Shampo.

Our 12 person team boasted 7 newcomers: Bo Lackey, Bill Shepard, Therese Nolan, Beth Fegan, Pati Flannery, Tim Scott and Paul Miller.   Therese, Beth, Pati  and Tim had experience with other run relay teams and taught us some new tricks. Paul peppered the twittersphere with great pictures (see @MillerRoad ).

My co-captain, Mark Clear (7), was the Van #1 driver this year.

Our team's story is on this blog ( http://www.rankstrangers.blogspot.com/2013/06/rank-strangers-go-for-ninth-madison.html ); we are the only team to run all 9 years of the race, starting well before the current "Ragnar Chicago" phase.

Rank Stranger history of fun in annual "running vacation"

Members of team Rank Strangers know best the excitement Ragnar has brought to the Madison to Chicago race.   That’s because this team has been at it since the race began in 2005 -- the only team to participate in all eight races -- including six times before it took the Ragnar Chicago name in 2011.

Pre-Ragnar, the race barely exceeded 100 teams and now there are more than 400.  “The change in the energy level is incredible,” says Rank Stranger co-founder Eric Engdahl. “There were lonely times on the course in the early years.  Now, there are always runners around you, which keeps us charging from start to finish.”

Chicago-based Engdahl teamed with Mark Clear of Madison to form the team that has fielded 40 different runners, and looks to introduce six rookies to the course this year.  The growing network is their proudest accomplishment.  “Each has been introduced by a Rank Stranger or a close friend,” Engdahl says.  “We ask them to suggest people they’d enjoy having in their van.”  Beyond that, it is about love of running, and having a sense of humor.

Rank Stranger co-founders Eric Engdahl and Mark Clear

“It’s a running vacation,” Engdahl says.  “I get to step completely out of my routine and for a couple of days – starting when we drive a van up from Chicago – my job is running.  And I get to build on strong friendships that have formed over the years, one race at a time.”

So far there’s been only one relay for Clear (mostly a bicyclist before he caught the relay bug) and Engdahl (27 marathons).  They met through work, partnering on a web development project. The announcement of  the Madison-Chicago race caught their attention.  What started as the Great Midwest Relay (GMR) in 2005 switched to Madison Chicago 200 (MC200) after two years.  Ragnar was behind the scenes in 2010 when race size jumped over 200 teams for the first time and since then it has been Ragnar Chicago.

The team’s priority is fun, not fast.  Rank Strangers typically finish in the middle of the pack. That hasn’t stopped some of the runners from blazing to fast times on their legs, however.   The team has many experienced marathoners, including six Boston qualifiers and two Iron Man triathletes.

"Rank Strangers" is a play on words. Mostly significantly, they are NOT strangers.  2005 runner Keith Dudding from the St. Louis area coined the team name, drawing inspiration from an old song, "I am a poor wayfaring stranger travelling through this world of woe."   He added, “actually, after we've all run a leg or two, we more closely resemble a tune made popular by The Stanley Brothers ... ‘Rank Strangers’.”
Veterans Jeff Shampo and Art Saffran

Rank Stranger team building includes tracking individual exploits on the team blog ( www.rankstrangers.info ) and circulating weekly training tips.  Engdahl compiles an annual photo book, commemorating the team's accomplishments.  A recent development is trading cards; photo on the front and statistics (each year’s miles by leg) on the back.  “Anything and everything to keep people thinking about next year’s team,” Engdahl says.

Back to the growing Rank Stranger community: there is a relationship map that shows who brought whom onto the team.  There’s a circle for each of the 40 Rank Strangers, each with a line showing who recruited them.

The shaded circles on the relationship map denote the twenty-one Rank Strangers who have run multiple races.   Engdahl and Jeff Shampo of Madison have run all eight years.   Clear and Art Saffran of Madison have raced 7 of 8.  Renee Roux of Chicago has raced five times.

There will be seven additions to the group this year. Several bring experience from Ragnar Las Vegas and Ragnar So Cal.

Rank Strangers represent a variety of careers. For example, Mark Clear is Executive Director of Accelerate Madison, a networking and educational organization focused on digital technology, as well as Alder, District 19, for the City of Madison since 2007.  Eric Engdahl is a manager at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.   Art Saffran is an independent technology consultant for small and medium businesses and non-profits and   Team In Training coach.  Jeff Shampo is an attorney, Renee Roux an IT executive and Keith Dudding a corporate training specialist.
