Our time was 28 hours and 59 minutes for 196 miles - an average of 8 minutes and 52 seconds per mile. By contrast, the prior year we covered 197 miles in 31:10 for an average of 9:29, 287th out of 502 teams.
The 2015 team had a combined 37 years of Madison-Chicago experience:
Van 1 had Art Saffran (9 relays prior to 2015), Pete Boll (5), Bo Lackey (2), Jill, Angie and Bob.
The race brought changes to the team record book:
1. Eric was able to move to first place in all time mileage with Jeff Shampo sitting out the race. Eric inched ahead of Jeff with 190.8 miles; Jeff has 187.8 miles. Art stayed in third with 176 miles. Steve moved from sixth to fifth, ahead of team co-founder Mark Clear. The full list is below, but here's the top 10:
Eric Engdahl |
Eric Engdahl 190.8 miles
Jeff Shampo 187.8
Art Saffran 176.1
Renee Roux 107.6
Steve Hill 106.4
Mark Clear 100.9
Pete Boll 97.7
Marc Golab 69.8
Randy Meacham 62.8
Holly Dowling 59.3
2. Art's 20 miles was his third race of 20 miles or more, equalling Eric for the most ever for Rank Strangers. Jeff Shampo and Marc Golab have two 20-milers each.
3. Bob's 9.9 mile first leg brought the number of Rank Strangers with runs of more than 8 miles to sixteen (16): Keith (2), Kim (2), Randy (2), Marc G. (2), Martin (2), Holly, Steve H., Ed S., Jeff (2), Art, Monique, Jennifer, Beth, Therese, Paul, Bob. The 8+ milers: Monique 11.8, Keith 11.7, Jennifer 10.9, Keith 10.7, Kim 9.9, Art 9.9, Bob 9.9, Jeff 9.6, Beth 9.3, Art 9.1, Randy 9, Martin 8.8, Holly 8.6, Steve H. 8.6, Randy 8.6, Marc G. 8.4, Kim 8.4, Marc G. 8.2, Martin 8.2, Ed S. 8.2, Therese 8.2, Jeff 8, Paul 8. (Keith’s runs, Monique’s 11.8 and Art’s 9.1 mile runs spanned multiple legs; the others were single legs).
There were other long runs this year including two 7.6 mile legs by Art, 7.5 by Paul and 7.5 by Randy.
Martin (21.3) and Monique (20.4) remain our leaders for average miles per relay mile (multiple relays).
See a sampling of pictures here but team members are asked to send their shots to Eric for the annual photo book - it promises to be the best yet based on what's already been submitted.
This blog had frequent posts during the race but @RankStrangers was useless on Twitter. Happily Van #2's Paul Miller ( @MillerRoad ) posted a lot of great pictures during the race.
Next for the Rank Stranger team is a long anticipated venture in Oregon -- the 34th Hood to Coast relay. Our team is all Rank Stranger veterans - Art, Jeff, Steve, Ed S., Cathy, Rachael, Eric, Randy, Denise, Greg, Jennifer, Renee. You'll be able to follow progress on this blog.
