Relay notes for new Rank Strangers

Here's a summary of what newcomers to Rank Strangers need to know.

1. The Ragnar app will give you maps on your phone, but Rank Strangers have an old school Excel spreadsheet to show our leg assignments - example pictured below.  There are 36 “legs” in the race, ranging in length from 3 miles to 8.6 miles.  You will be assigned 3 legs for a total of between 10.6 and 20.8 miles.

Rank Strangers typically finishes in the middle of the back.  Our priority is fun, not fast, although we have a number of experienced marathoners (including Boston qualifiers), and even Iron Men. That hasn’t stopped some of our runners from blazing to fast times on their legs, however.

When will you run?  The exact times depend on which van you join and everyone else’s pace, but you will get runs in the morning, afternoon and night (read: dark, with headlamp and blinky vest).

2.  The team provides required "safety gear" -- reflective vests and night lights -- though some people bring their own to eliminate the chance they'll end up sharing sweaty stuff.  You will have at least one (1) night run where the gear is required.

Perhaps the most significant
development since our first race in 2005:
Hefty's jumbo bag - keeps each shift's
gear dry and then seals it away.
3. This packing list from our blog (www.rankstrangers.info) dates from our first year and is a sentimental favorite:  http://rankstrangers.blogspot.com/p/packing-checklist.html

4. Sleep will be lacking.  Grab it when you can.  In the van, in a field, wherever...

5.  Race morning details will be ironed out once Ragnar shares information such as start location and maps.  I've got a tentative schedule below.  (minor revisions 4/25/2018)

Headlamp and blinky vest
required for night runs.
Chicago-area runners can meet me in River North and ride to the start, or meet at the start  in Morton Grove to attend Ragnar’s “safety briefing".

“Madison van” runners coming from Chicago will be united with their team at the transition area in Northern Illinois shortly after noon on Friday.  There are non-Wisconsin people in the Chicago van.  We will hand off runners along with the slap bracelet at the first transition area!

Grab sleep when you can!
Madison van: Pete, Cathy, Margaret, Gina, Amanda, Alexander
Chicago van: Eric, Renee, Steve, Melinda, Susanna, Jason

Here's a tentative schedule:

Thursday, May 17

Pick up rental vans in Madison and Chicago  (Pete & Eric)

Friday, May 18

6:00AM – Chicago van leaves downtown for Morton Grove (Linne Woods) start
7:30 – Start registration
6:30 – Chicago van members meet at Linne Woods
8:30 – Madison van departs for Illinois

7 – Race start

11:30 – Madison van starts registration at transition area
1pm – Van transition

Saturday, May 19

3pm – Finish @ Madison

5pm – Chicago van departs for Chicago

6. Schedule example.  See below for a sample of our schedule spreadsheet.  You will see that….

Mark’s projected minutes-per-mile pace is at best (fastest) 9 minute miles.  Worst (slowest) – 10.5 minutes per mile.

Schedule example
Total mileage for Mark is 15.5 miles.  Mark’s first leg, starting at 9AM on Friday, is 5.2 miles.

Mark’s second leg (#13 overall) is 4.8 miles.  He’ll start between 6:13PM and 7:18PM – depends on how we do on the intervening 11 legs.  If we all nail our “high” pace, it’ll be 6:13PM.  It is not unknown for us to get ahead of schedule – this is why your van will be watching you closely; cell phones keep the vans in synch.

Mark’s third leg (#25) is 5.4 miles and starts between 3:44AM and 5:57AM on Saturday.  The grey shading reminds us it will be dark.

(Don’t get attached to the “From” and “To” times.  They’ll change when we plug in the predictions from all runners).

2018 lineup set for 14th Madison-Chicago outing

There has been great progress with recruiting for this year's team.  Since early February we had some turnover, with Jeff, Greg, Mark, Randy and Denise all bowing out.  Melinda, Margaret, Susanna, Alexander and Jason stepped in.

The tentative lineup:
  • Madison van:  Pete, Cathy, Gina, Amanda, Margaret, Alexander (this van will start second and finish in Madison
  • Chicago van: Eric, Renee, Steve,  Susanna, Jason, Melinda
There are five rookies, bringing us to 65 different runners as we tackle the race for the 14th time - every year since its inception in 2005.  The rookies are Gina, Margaret, Susanna, Jason, Alexander.

Still no maps or other details from Ragnar about the May 18-19 race.  They'll take their sweet time, as usual.  Admittedly, they are busy, with 18 road races in the United States, 1 in Canada and 2 in Europe, along with 17 trail relays.

Rank Stranger watch party - Oct. 8, 2017 Chicago Marathon

Rank Strangers and 1,000,000 others are invited to join a Chicago Marathon watch party on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017.  I will follow the model from the past two years and track Rank Strangers Randy and Denise Meacham, Peter Wagner and my pal Bill Halvorsen from Blue Cross.   Come to the spots shown on this map  Link  and I'll see you there; it is the 3.5, 11.1 and 23.1 mile spots.

Here's who I'm tracking.

In 2016 I was able to see the Meachams and Rank Stranger Paul Miller.

See maps and pictures of the viewing spots in the blog entry for the 2015 viewing plan:  Link

My race day garb - I think this will catch the eyes of my runners:

First, Chicago Fire jersey and White Sox half-way-to-St-Patrick's-Day cap

Balloon -- likely without Kay to hold it

They did it!

Belatedly....wrapping up the June 2017 race

Finally getting around to writing up our journey from Madison to Chicago...I'll let the annual photo book's recap suffice as a summary:

Rank Strangers brought experience to the 2017 Madison-Chicago run relay but once again it was a fresh, unique challenge.  The June 9-10 race was our 13th straight appearance and our 12 person team had a cumulative 43 years of Madison-Chicago experience.   But there's magic in the new van combinations; new alliances formed and old friends had a year's worth of catching up.  We are the only team to appear every year of the race, which has changed sponsorship three times and has grown from 60+ teams to 500+ teams.   This year it was called Reebok Ragnar Chicago.

The Rank Stranger family grew to 60 with the addition of three rookies on this year's team.  Of veterans, team co-founders Eric Engdahl and Mark Clear represented the inaugural 2005 team, accompanied by long-timers Steve Hill (8th race), Randy Meacham (5th race).   Cathy Jooste, Ed Stojakovic and Paul Miller became 4-timers.

The newcomers were Melinda Roenisch, referred by Ed, William Serpa, referred by Eric's friend Rich Go, and Emma Guiot, high school exchange student who will ran with her USA dad, Randy. Emma returned to her small hometown in northwestern France  shortly after the race.  The relationship map at the back of the book shows who-brought-whom onto the team.

We have two large vans, with six runners in each. The members of the van watch their first runner begin, drive ahead a few miles, cheer the runner on, offering water and encouragement.  That vehicle then drives ahead to the exchange point where they drop off the second runner, and pick up the runner completing the first leg. The pattern repeats for six legs until the vans last runner hands off to the first runner in the other van.  This leapfrogging pattern continues all the way to the finish line.  The "off" van moves into position for the next handoff.  Food?  A shower?  Sleep?  Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Some trivia about this years team: Six (6) of this year's runners raced together in 2016 (Mark, Cathy, Peter, Bob, Eric, Steve).  Five (5) ran on our 2015 Hood To Coast (Oregon) team (Cathy, Eric, Steve, Ed, Randy), with Van#1s designated driver, Art Saffran, making six.

2017 team: (back row): Cathy, Eric, Mark, Randy, Steve, Ed, Emma;
(front row): Paul, Bob, Peter, William.  Not picture: Melinda.
